Tony Cottee tells Arsenal to do this in the January transfer window

The former West Ham United star wants to see Arsene Wenger splash the cash at Arsenal in January

Tony Cottee has urged Arsene Wenger to splash the cash on at least two top players in the January transfer window to boost Arsenal’s title hopes.

The north London side moved top of the Premier League table with a comfortable 2-0 at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon ahead of Leicester City’s clash with Chelsea on Monday night.

Arsenal have been tipped by many to be serious title contenders this season as Wenger looks to guide the Gunners to their first Premier League triumph since their unbeaten season in 2003-04.

And although former West Ham star Cottee feels that Arsenal will be genuine contenders this term, the ex-striker believes that the north Londoners are still lacking some star quality.

Cottee told Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning: “I think they’re going to be close [to winning the title] without a doubt.

“Everyone’s inconsistent at the moment but the two teams you would expect to be there or thereabouts are Arsenal and Manchester City. All the other teams are spluttering around and dropping points. You would expect them to be there.

“I personally would like to see Arsene Wenger go into the transfer window, get a couple of top, top players – and I mean pay serious money – and I think we’ll see Arsenal win the league.

“Whether Wenger will do that, I’m not sure, but that’s what I’d like to see him do.”
