Ferdinand, Schmeichel and more: Twitter reacts as Man United lose to Wolfsburg
Rio Ferdinand and Peter Schmeichel both tweet their thoughts after Manchester United are knocked out of the Champions League
Manchester United were parachuted down into the Europa League on Tuesday night after a dramatic 3-2 loss to Wolfsburg confirmed their Champions League elimination.
Louis van Gaal’s men took the lead against the Bundesliga side in the 10th minute when Anthony Martial slotted home after latching on to Juan Mata’s perfectly weighted through ball.
However, Wolfsburg equalised within three minutes through Naldo’s volley and then took the lead themselves when Vieirinha finished a superb flowing team move.
United equalised in the 82nd minute through Josuha Guilavogui’s own goal, but the home side replied moments later thanks to Naldo’s header in the 84th minute.
The result, which followed last weekend’s lacklustre goalless draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford, parachuted the Red Devils down into the Europa League after they finished third in their group behind Wolfsburg and PSV Eindhoven.
The game inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.
As a @ManUtd player I was embarrassed going from the Champions league to the Europa league…we expected more of ourselves.

Still think it's madness to sack LVG. Even though they are stumbling they could very well win PL. End of season is the time to make decision

Somewhere in deepest, darkest Manchester, a plane banner with 'LVG Out' is getting readied. It's coming.
