Van Gaal gives latest Man United injury update ahead of Stoke trip
Louis van Gaal says Matteo Darmian won't feature for Manchester United at Stoke City
Louis van Gaal says Matteo Darmian won’t feature for Manchester United at Stoke City on Boxing Day.
The Italy international is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury which he suffered in the first half of United’s 3-2 defeat by Wolfsburg in the Champions League earlier this month.
Darmian was named Italy’s right-back of the year last week after a big year for the former Torino defender, who moved to United in an £11.5m deal in the summer transfer window.
And Van Gaal, whose side are winless in their last six games in all competitions, delivered an update on Darmian’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s trip to Britannia Stadium.
“I think Darmian shall come [back] next week and then maybe against Chelsea, we have to see,” Van Gaal told United’s website.
Van Gaal added that Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw remain long-term absentees for the Red Devils, whilst Phil Jones came through his 90-minute test against the Canaries.
“It is more or less the same, so there is no difference, only that Phil Jones played 90 minutes against Norwich and had no reaction. That’s a good signal,” the United boss added.
Van Gaal continued: “Of course, we have injuries that take a long time. For example, Shaw, Valencia and Rojo, and you cannot change that.”
The Red Devils are in five place and nine points behind surprise leaders Leicester City.
