Watford 3 Liverpool 0: Player ratings as Ighalo humiliates Skrtel

Player ratings as Odion Ighalo fires Watford to a 3-0 win against Liverpool at Vicarage Road

Watford

Heurelho Gomes The Watford goalkeeper wasn’t called into action on too many occasions. He made a fine save to deny Henderson after the break. 6/10

Allan Nyom The Watford full-back kept Firmino well-marshalled. Although Liverpool looked to target the right-back, Nyom was rarely exposed. 7

Miguel Britos Britos was strong in the air, although it was a one-side battled given Liverpool’s pint-sized playmakers. 7

Craig Cathcart The Watford centre-half wasn’t really tested until Origi’s introduction before the break. 7

Nathan Ake His persistence won a second-minute corner and the on-loan Chelsea midfielder capitalised on Bogdan’s mistake. Solid defensively and rescued by Gomes on the one occasion Henderson beat the full-back. 8

Etienne Capoue He made a vital interception from a Liverpool corner. The former Tottenham midfielder didn’t give Henderson or Lucas time on the ball. 8

Ben Watson The Watford midfielder kept the Liverpool defence honest with his wicked set-piece deliveries. A good performance. 7

Almen Abdi His strong tackling had the home supporters on their feet. Impressed in front of his idol, Jurgen Klopp. 7

Troy Deeney The Watford captain played a lovely ball over the top to set Ighalo on his way for the home side’s second goal. It was an outstanding all-round performance. 8

Jose Manuel Jurado He showed silky feet to dance past his opponents on more than one occasion. 7

Odion Ighalo (man of the match) The Watford striker scored his sixth goal in seven games. He managed to shrug off Skrtel’s challenge and guide a delightful finish past Bogdan from a tight angle. A nuisance and capped a brilliant performance with his second late on. 8

Liverpool

Adam Bogdan The Liverpool number two dropped a third-minute clanger as Ake gave Watford the lead. Bogdan could do little about Ighalo’s goal, though. While there was an element of misfortune about Ake’s goal, Bogdan was almost left red-faced again after an attempted punch nearly ended up in his own net. He did make amends with a fine save to deny Ighalo after the break. 4

Nathaniel Clyne The right-back could have been stronger as he conceded the corner which led to Ake’s opener. Clyne continues to disappoint. 5

Martin Skrtel Embarrassingly pushed aside by Ighalo as the Watford striker netted the home side’s second goal. Skrtel was forced off injured in the 40th minute in an uncharacteristically tepid performance from the normally tenacious defender. 4

Mamadou Sakho A comical slip gave Ighalo the chance to make it three but the striker was denied. Sakho became more of a liability as the game progressed. 5

Alberto Moreno He had a James McClean moment when he felt aggrieved that he didn’t receive a free-kick and clattered Nyom as his frustrations boiled over. 6

Jordan Henderson The Liverpool captain played some wonderful diagonal balls. Shifted out to the right wing following Skrtel’s injury. His final ball was poor. He had the chance to score his third goal of the season but Gomes produced a brilliant save. 5

Lucas Leiva He played at centre-half following Skrtel’s injury. He did well under the circumstances. 5

Emre Can He was a powerful runner with the ball for the visitors. Can was one of the few Liverpool players to emerge with credit. 7

Adam Lallana Another quiet performance from the former Southampton captain. He received a roasting from his skipper after failing to play Henderson in on goal with Liverpool breaking. 5

Roberto Firmino A disappointing performance from the summer signing. The Brazilian still appears to be getting up to speed in the Premier League. 5

Philippe Coutinho A tame effort to register Liverpool’s first shot on target. Coutinho had threatening moments but couldn’t unlock a well-drilled Watford defence. 6

Subsitutes

Divock Origi For the second successive week, Origi replaced a centre-half as Jurgen Klopp threw caution to the wind. His introduction lifted Liverpool. 6
