Alan Shearer pinpoints what Arsenal need to do in the January transfer window

Alan Shearer says Arsenal need to sign at least three players in the January transfer window...

Alan Shearer believes that Arsenal need to sign three players in key positions during the January transfer window if they are to sustain a genuine Premier League title challenge.

The Gunners head into the new year top of the Premier League table on goal difference from second-placed Leicester City as Arsene Wenger looks to steer his side towards their first top-flight title since 2003-04.

Many are tipping Arsenal to be one of the main contenders for the title this season along with third-placed Manchester City.

Arsenal currently have a number of first-team regulars unavailable due to injury, including the likes of Jack Wilshere, Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla.

Former England and Newcastle United striker Shearer reckons that the north London side are in need of a number of new recruits this month.

Shearer told BBC Sport: “Arsenal are in a strong position in the Premier League and also through to the last 16 of the Champions League again. But they always seem to get injuries – already this season is no exception – so they need to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.

“Another centre-forward, a defensive midfielder and a centre-half should all be on Arsene Wenger’s list but the difficult thing for Wenger is to find a way of doing that in the middle of the season to improve his team.”
