Alan Smith: Why Nacho Monreal deal is good for Arsenal
Alan Smith heaps praise on Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal
Alan Smith has praised Arsenal for securing Nacho Monreal’s long-term future.
The 29-year-old put pen to paper on a new contract with the FA Cup holders on Tuesday afternoon after he moved to Arsenal from Malaga in 2013.
Monreal has established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice left-back ahead of Kieran Gibbs in the 2015/16 season so far.
Former Arsenal striker Smith heaped praise on the Spanish left-back after the full-back secured his long-term future at the Premier League leaders.
“He’s been absolutely outstanding,” Monreal told Sky Sports.
“He’s a really resilient defender; makes very few mistakes and positionally he has improved that side of his game. He’s one of those you can hang your hat on now. “
“It’s been a problem position. Kieran Gibbs has been around there for a number of years, but I think Monreal is a grittier defender than him. It’s [his new deal] a good deal for the club and him.”
Monreal has made 113 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions following his move to the Gunners from La Liga side Malaga in January 2013.
The Spanish full-back has won back-to-back FA Cups since his move to the Emirates Stadium from Malaga three years ago.
