Arsene Wenger reacts to reports of Arsenal’s first January signing
Arsene Wenger denies reports that Arsenal are on the verge of signing Mohamed Elneny during the January transfer window
Arsene Wenger remained coy when quizzed about the speculation linking Arsenal with a January transfer swoop for Mohamed Elneny.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a mid-season move for the Egypt midfielder as Wenger looks to add cover for the likes of Francis Coquelin in his Arsenal side ahead of the second half of the campaign.
We are out there to get someone but at the moment we haven’t signed anybody
There have been reports in the British media in recent days suggesting that Elneny has already passed a medical at Emirates Stadium and is on the verge of becoming Arsenal’s first signing of the January transfer window.
However, Wenger moved to pour cold water on those reports in the immediate aftermath of Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United at The Emirates on Saturday.
Asked if there was an update on the Elneny situation, Wenger told his post-match news conference: “No. I have nothing to say because he is not our player.
“We have not signed anybody and we are not imminently in a position where we can say we have signed somebody.
“We are out there to get someone but at the moment we haven’t signed anybody.”
Arsenal’s win over Newcastle moved them two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
