Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger predicts winner of Ballon d’Or 2015
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is tipping Lionel Messi to win the 2015 Ballon d'Or award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo
Arsene Wenger is tipping Lionel Messi to win his fifth Ballon d’Or on Monday evening, despite the Arsenal boss admitting that he is not a fan of world football’s most prestigious individual award.
Messi is the heavy favourite to beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar to the prize in Zurich after he helped to inspire Barcelona to a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble last season.
The Arsenal manager describes himself as an “enemy” of the Ballon d’Or award but is nevertheless fully expecting Messi to collect the prize for first time since 2012 following another sparkling season.
Speaking at a news conference at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground on Monday morning, Wenger said: “You know as well as I do that it will be Messi.
“The team [Barcelona] won absolutely everything. It has to be a Barcelona player; when you pick a Barcelona player, it is certainly Messi.”
He continued: “Overall I’m not a big fan of it.
“We are in a team sport. It is not logical just for individual effort. We live a world in which it is all about the individual. It is a bit contradictory to what is the route of our sport. I am a big enemy of the Ballon d’Or.”
Real Madrid star Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or for the last two years running but ended 2015 without a trophy.
The winner will be announced at a gala in Zurich on Monday evening at around 19:30 GMT.
