Bastian Schweinsteiger reacts to Man United’s 2-1 win over Swansea

Bastian Schweinsteiger speaks of his delight as Manchester United notch up a 2-1 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford

Bastian Schweinsteiger hailed a “very important” victory after Manchester United kicked off 2016 with a 2-1 Premier League win over Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

After an uninspiring first half, United took the lead in the 47th minute when summer signing Anthony Martial headed home.

However, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s equaliser in the 70th minute set up a tense finale for the home fans at Old Trafford.

But Wayne Rooney’s brilliant instinctive winner handed the Red Devils the three points and their first win in eight games in all competitions.

And midfielder Schweinsteiger admitted that the result was crucial for Van Gaal’s side as they look to bounce back from their recent stuttering form.

Speaking to BBC Sport after Saturday’s win, World Cup winner Schweinsteiger said: “Today the victory was very important. It was not so easy after the equaliser but we kept going. It was not so good after we lost three matches against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke, but we responded well.

“The team has character and you can see that. We tried to press. We tried to control the game and score goals. We’ve had chances to score goals. It was important to get two today.”
