Charlie Nicholas reacts to Man United’s 1-0 loss to Southampton
Charlie Nicholas says Manchester United are likely to stick by Louis van Gaal until the end of the season
Charlie Nicholas believes that Manchester United are likely to stick by Louis van Gaal until the end of the season – despite their 1-0 loss to Southampton on Saturday.
The Red Devils headed into the game looking to build on their 1-0 win over Liverpool last weekend but failed to make it back to back wins as the Saints claimed all three points at Old Trafford.
After a goalless first half, debutant Charlie Austin came off the bench to head home the winner in the 87th minute to pile yet more pressure on Van Gaal.
There is bound to be plenty of speculation about the Dutchman’s position at the club in the coming days, but Nicholas feels that United are likely to stick with their current manager until the summer.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ after Saturday’s game, Nicholas said: “I can’t see them sacking him [but] he may have to walk away.
“I think what they’re hoping for as a club is to buy time until the end of the season.
“I know people like Ryan Giggs can come in and temporarily take charge of the situation but it’s a big upheaval. Who would he bring in, because all of the Dutch [coaches] will go out?
“They’re trying to buy time and pacify people until the summer when it will probably change hands at management level.”
The result left United fifth in the table and five points behind Tottenham in fourth.
