Charlie Nicholas reacts to talk of Mesut Ozil matching Arsenal legend
Charlie Nicholas discusses the recent comparisons between Mesut Ozil and Dennis Bergkamp at Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas believes that Mesut Ozil has some way to go before he can be considered to be at a similar level to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.
The Arsenal playmaker has earned plenty of new admirers this season following a brilliant start to the campaign by the Germany international.
Heading into the new year and Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United at Emirates Stadium, Ozil had already notched up 16 assists in the top flight to help the Gunners move top of the table at the start of 2016.
Ozil’s recent rise to prominence at Arsenal has prompted comparisons with Gunners playmaker Bergkamp.
However, former Arsenal man Nicholas feels that such talk is premature, despite being impressed by what he has seen from the 27-year-old so far this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon, Nicholas said: “He’s got quite a bit to go to be as good as the Ice Man.
“Dennis had more cutting edge in the box. Around about the box, I think Ozil is becoming a leader and the position he plays is becoming more important to the team and him.
“I was reading this morning that he doesn’t train very much. He’s got a freshness, an energy about him now. I think he’s got a bit more muscle, he’s adapted to the physical side of the English game – although sometimes he gets brushed off the ball too easily.
“He’s a different player [to Bergkamp]. Bergkamp could score goals, make goals and had a nasty streak to him. He was more used to running in a fabric of a team that was built with winners. Ozil is trying to help these other players become the winners that they haven’t been for a long time.”
Ozil has helped Arsenal win back to back FA Cup titles in the last two seasons following his big-money transfer to The Emirates from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
