Charlie Nicholas: Why Man United were much improved v Chelsea
Charlie Nicholas reckons Ryan Giggs inspired a much improved performance from Man United's attacking players
Charlie Nicholas has credited Ryan Giggs for Manchester United’s much-improved attacking performance in a goalless draw with Chelsea.
The Red Devils failed to beat the defending Premier League champions despite the hosts hitting the woodwork twice in the first half as Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.
United are have failed to win any of their last four Premier League games, whilst Louis van Gaal’s side are without victory in their last eight outings in all competitions.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas reckons United legend Giggs demanded a better attacking performance from the likes of Martial, Rooney, Juan Mata and Memphis Depay following a 2-0 loss to Stoke City on Boxing Day.
Nicholas told Sky Sports: “Giggs stormed off after the Stoke defeat with a furious look on his face and I think he could have played a part in the improved display against Chelsea.
“I think he’s gone to the attack-minded players and said: ‘Come on, it’s time you guys started delivering. The defence has been doing okay but we need you to start performing – Rooney, Martial and Mata we need more from you’, and that may be marked the improvement on Monday.
“I’m hoping Ryan is getting them angry and maybe that’s just what they need.”
United are in sixth place in the Premier League table following their goalless stalemate with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday night.
