David De Gea pinpoints major improvement Man United have made this season
David De Gea believes that Manchester United deserve credit for improving their defensive record this season
David De Gea has praised Manchester United for improving their defensive record this season, despite a difficult few months at Old Trafford.
Only Tottenham Hotspur have conceded fewer goals than the Red Devils this season as Louis van Gaal’s men have shown improvement at the back.
United have been heavily criticised for a perceived lack of attacking intent in recent weeks, with Van Gaal’s side having failed to win a game in eight attempts heading into the new year.
However, after United returned to winning ways with a battling 2-1 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford at the weekend, De Gea feels that the Red Devils deserve credit for improving their defensive record.
De Gea told United’s website: “I believe we are defending better than we did last season, and I think that’s vital for a team: to not concede many goals and to have a strong defence.
“We know we have some top quality players up front and that we will score goals. The most important thing for a good side is to have a solid base at the back.”
Saturday’s win over Swansea left United in fifth place in the Premier League table and three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils take on Sheffield United in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
