David May pinpoints what Man United need in the January transfer window
David May says Manchester United must try and sign a striker this month
David May has told Manchester United that they must go all out to try to sign a top-quality striker during the January transfer window.
The Red Devils have come in for plenty of criticism for the lack of attacking intent in recent weeks.
United have only won three of their last 10 Premier League games and twice squandered the lead as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
Louis van Gaal is thought to be on the lookout for reinforcements this month as he looks to add some more firepower to his squad at Old Trafford.
And former United defender May believes that a quality centre-forward should be top of Van Gaal’s shopping list this month.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 888Sport, May said: “I’d love United to go out and get a top-class centre forward but it’s getting that player.
“We got rid of Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez, Angel Di Maria, and Falcao and didn’t replace any of them with a top player. We got Anthony Martial who no-one really knew and he’s done OK but if he gets injured then United are struggling. Then you’re relying on Wayne and James Wilson coming back.
“Memphis can play up front but you can’t rely on him until now and the end of the season.”
United finished fourth in the Premier League last season but were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage last month.
