Dietmar Hamann: Why Shane Long would be perfect for Liverpool

Dietmar Hamann says Southampton striker Shane Long would be a good signing for Liverpool in January

Dietmar Hamann says Southampton striker Shane Long would be the perfect signing for Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international is facing a fight to save his Saints career after Ronald Koeman signed Charlie Austin in a £4m deal from Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.

Long, who moved to St Mary’s from West Brom in a £10m deal in 2014, has been competing with Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane for a first-team spot in Koeman’s starting line-up this term.

Jurgen Klopp has opted against using Christian Benteke in Liverpool’s recent Premier League games, preferring to play without a recognised striker up front.

Former Liverpool midfielder Hamann explained why Long would be a good signing for the 18-time English champions in the January transfer window.

Long has scored five goals in 14 Premier League games so far this season, although the Irishman has only started nine top-flight games.
