Wayne Rooney chose eventual winner Lionel Messi as his pick for the 2015 Ballon d’Or award – ahead of Thomas Muller and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Argentina international collected world football’s most prestigious individual prize for the fifth time on Monday night after he beat off competition from Ronaldo and Neymar to win his first award since 2012.
The prize is voted for by national team managers and captains, plus selected journalists named on a list compiled by France Football and Fifa.
And Manchester United captain Rooney placed Bayern Munich forward Muller ahead of his former team-mate Ronaldo in his pecking order for 2015.
Messi won with 41.33 per cent of the vote, ahead of Ronaldo (27.76 per cent) and Neymar (7.86 per cent).
The Argentina international netted a staggering 48 goals in 56 games for club and country in 2015 as he inspired Barcelona to a La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble last season.
