Frank McLintock tells Arsenal to do this in the January transfer window
Frank McLintock wants to see Arsenal sign cover for Per Mertesacker during the January transfer window
Frank McLintock has urged Arsenal to sign a new centre-half during the January transfer window to help the Gunners sustain their Premier League title challenge.
Many are expecting Arsenal to be one of the front-runners to win the Premier League crown this season, with Arsene Wenger’s men currently two points clear at the top of the table at the start of the new year.
There are still positions they can improve on
With the January transfer window now open, there have been plenty of players linked with moves to Emirates Stadium, including the likes of FC Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny.
However, former Arsenal defender McLintock would like to see the Gunners bring in cover for the likes of defender Per Mertesacker, who he feels is now past his best.
McLintock told talkSPORT: “I’d like to see an improvement in January, especially at centre-half.
“I think Per Mertesacker has been a bit fortunate. He’s been a great pro and a great player for Germany, but I can’t see him getting in the Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Real Madrid teams. That’s a position that needs to be filled.
“If [Francis] Coquelin is injured there isn’t a ready-made player with any height or strength who could play in that holding midfield position, and they definitely need another top class centre-forward too in case [Olivier] Giroud – who has been effective this season – gets injured.
“There are still positions they can improve on.”
Arsenal, who beat Newcastle United 1-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, are now gearing up for the first game of their FA Cup title defence – a home clash with Sunderland on Saturday.
