Glenn Hoddle issues Liverpool warning over Simon Mignolet
Glenn Hoddle says Liverpool number one Simon Mignolet is already at his peak
Glenn Hoddle has warned Liverpool that Simon Mignolet won’t get any better.
The 27-year-old shot stopper signed a new five-and-a-half year deal with the Merseyside outfit last Monday despite an error-strewn season at Anfield.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a move for a goalkeeper in the January transfer window as he looks to put a stop to the club’s poor record at set-pieces.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday afternoon, Hoddle appeared to question Liverpool’s decision to secure Mignolet’s long-term future at the 18-time English champions.
“It is immaterial. Someone else will come in at some stage anyway,” Hoddle said. “Will he prove himself as a better and better goalkeeper over the next five years? I’m not so sure. I think he is at his best now.
“I don’t see him getting any better. He is still a very good goalkeeper. Every successful team needs that spine. Is he a major part of the spine?”
Liverpool have conceded 32 goals in 23 Premier League games so far this season, which includes four against Norwich City in Saturday’s 5-4 victory at Carrow Road.
Mignolet, who is facing competition from Adam Bogdan and Danny Jones for a starting spot, moved to 18-time English champions Liverpool from Sunderland in a £9m deal in 2013.
The Belgian goalkeeper has made 121 appearances for Liverpool over two-and-a-half seasons at the Merseyside outfit.
