Glenn Hoddle replies when asked if Tottenham can really win the title

Glenn Hoddle discusses Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League title hopes this season

Glenn Hoddle has questioned whether Tottenham have what it takes to upset the odds and win the Premier League title this season.

In one of the most unpredictable campaigns to date, Spurs have emerged as potential contenders for the title and currently sit fourth in the table, five points behind current leaders Leicester City heading into the final 15 games of the season.

Spurs are not used to being within touching distance of the top teams at this stage of the season

The north London side were 3-1 winners at Crystal Palace last weekend and have been touted by many to be genuine contenders this term.

Mauricio Pochettino’s main priority will be to guide Tottenham back into the Champions League after they finished fifth under the Argentine coach last season.

Hoddle believes that Tottenham are having to navigate unchartered territory this season and could struggle due to their lack of experience.

However, the former England boss reckons that Spurs are more than capable of competing with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Leicester as the title race hots up.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Hoddle said: “There is no doubt that Tottenham have the ability to win the Premier League title in this unpredictable season, but I ask the question whether they seriously believe they can do it.

“This is a one-off year, with Manchester United struggling and the champions Chelsea falling out of the top four in inexplicable circumstances.

“I look at that Tottenham squad and there is no reason they cannot compete with Arsenal and Man City, and I guess we have to put Leicester in the mix for the title now. If Leicester are in there, Spurs are certainly contenders as well.

“Spurs are not used to being within touching distance of the top teams at this stage of the season, but they are there on merit and could be crowned as champions so long as they retain a belief that they can get the job done.

“At this moment, we don’t know whether that inner confidence is there within the Spurs players and I guess we will only find out whether they have got what it takes when we get into the back end of the season.”
