Glenn Hoddle: Why Tottenham should have signed Charlie Austin
Glenn Hoddle says Charlie Austin would have been a great loan signing for Tottenham Hotspur
Glenn Hoddle says Charlie Austin would have been a great loan signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
The north London side are being linked with a move for a striker in the January transfer window as manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to sign cover for Harry Kane.
Austin scored his first goal for Southampton on Saturday afternoon after the 26-year-old came off the bench to net a winner in the Saints’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
Former Spurs manager Hoddle reckons former Queens park Rangers striker Austin would have been a brilliant signing to act as Kane’s back-up at White Hart Lane.
“Well it depends if Kane gets injured, Spurs can get top four if he doesn’t get injured,” Hoddle told BT Sport.
“Charlie Austin, even on loan, would have been happy to go to Spurs. Spurs’s shape needs someone who will go there and be Kane’s replacement.
“Charlie would have been perfect for it.”
Austin moved to the Saints in a £4m deal from Championship side QPR last weekend.
Spurs have been linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino in recent weeks.
Tottenham were 3-1 winners against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening.
