Graeme Le Saux runs rule over reported Chelsea target Diego Simeone
Graeme Le Saux runs the rule over Chelsea's next manager, discussing whether Diego Simeone would be the right appointment
Graeme Le Saux believes Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone will be under consideration for the permanent Chelsea job in the summer.
Dutch head coach Guus Hiddink took over the reins of the defending Premier League champions in December after the Blues sacked Jose Mourinho following their ninth top-flight defeat of the season.
Simeone has been touted as one potential appointment to fill Hiddink’s role in the summer if the former Russia manager should leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
The former Argentina midfielder has led Atletico Madrid to La Liga glory, the Copa del Rey and the Europa League since taking over Los Rojiblancos in 2011.
While Le Saux believes Simeone is a contender to take charge of Chelsea, the former Blues defender isn’t sure whether the Argentinian would be the best fit.
“It’s fantastic what he’s achieved at Atletico,” said Le Saux, speaking exclusively to 888poker.com.
“He’s working in a tough league that is dominated by two teams yet he’s developed a squad and morale of that underdog mentality. They are a feisty team who have an edge to them and never get intimidated.
“I look at him and he’s a man whose stock has risen over the past four years and with Chelsea you think what does that fit look like? He will have caught Chelsea’s eye but so will any number of other managers.”
Chelsea won their fourth Premier League title last season under Mourinho as well as the League Cup at Wembley.
