Graeme Le Saux: Why Chelsea’s signing deserves chance to impress
Graeme Le Saux says Chelsea must trust summer signing Baba Rahman
Chelsea show faith in summer signing Baba Rahman, according to Graeme Le Saux.
The 21-year-old has only made four Premier League appearances for the defending champions following his summer move to Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho signed the Ghanaian defender in a £21m deal from Augsburg, but the Bundesliga club are reportedly keen to bring the defender back to Germany.
According to talkSPORT, Chelsea would be willing to cut their losses and accept a £10m offer for the out-of-favour Ghana international.
However, former Blues defender Le Saux believes the west London side should give Rahman a run in the first-team.
“They have done it a couple of times now,” said Le Saux,
“They bought Philipe Luis for fourteen million or thereabouts and he hardly got a look in. They ended up selling him at a reduced fee back to Atletico. Before that they sold Ryan Bertrand after he had loans at different clubs and he is now playing for England.
“And now they’ve got Baba Rahman who they’ve paid a lot of money for – and who is highly rated – but he hasn’t played. I’d be frustrated if I was a left-back and there was a right-back playing my position.”
“I like to see left footed players playing left-back and right footed players playing right-back. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. As good as Azpilicuerta is – and he has been fantastic particularly last season – going forward he cannot offer what Baba Rahman does.”
The 21-year-old left-back has made nine appearances in all competitions for the west London side since his summer move.
Rahman made one assist in Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv in November.
