Graeme Souness: Why Liverpool must prioritise top-four finish
Graeme Souness explains why a top-four finish is key for Liverpool
Graeme Souness says securing a top-four finish must be Liverpool’s priority this season.
The Reds face an uphill battle to secure their place in next season’s Champions League competition following a three-game winless run in the Premier League.
Their priority has to be to get into the top four
Liverpool haven’t won since 28 December when Christian Benteke scored in a 1-0 victory over Sam Allardyce’s struggling Sunderland side.
The Reds are eight points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur after defeats by Manchester United and West Ham United, and a draw with Arsenal.
While Souness believes winning the League Cup is the obvious target for the Reds, the former Liverpool captain underlined why a top-four finish is vital.
“I don’t think they can win the Premier League this year,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“If they get into the top four and win a cup, that would be a fabulous first season for Jurgen Klopp. The Capital One Cup would be the obvious target.
“The FA Cup will be a bigger challenge because there is still a lot of top teams in that.
“Their priority has to be to get into the top four.”
Liverpool make the trip to promoted side Norwich City in the Premier League in Saturday’s early kick-off at Carrow Road.
The Reds have won their last five Premier League games at Norwich.
Klopp’s side have only won five of their 13 top-flight games under the former Borussia Dortmund manager.
