Ian Holloway: Man United should have signed this striker this month

Ian Holloway reckons Manchester United should have swooped for Charlie Austin this month

Ian Holloway believes that Southampton deserve credit for showing faith in Charlie Austin and reckons Manchester United should have tabled a bid for the forward.

Austin, who joined Southampton from Queens Park Rangers this month, came off the bench to score the winner as the Saints secured a memorable 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Holloway believes that a club of Manchester United’s stature would have overlooked a player such as Austin and the former Blackpool boss has heaped praise on Ronald Koeman for showing faith in the forward.

Holloway told Sky Sports: “Why is anyone surprised? In the last 18 months, apart from Harry Kane, I haven’t seen a better centre-forward than Austin in English football.

“Remember, he scored 18 goals in the Premier League for a team that finished bottom. If you can do that, you’ve got to be pretty special. What I love most about him is that he hasn’t sulked – he always tried his hardest for QPR.

“Manchester United can’t score for toffee. Why didn’t they go in for him? I’ll tell you why. Austin’s not a fashionable signing. For some reason, Austin doesn’t fit the criteria of one of the big wigs to buy him. Some players are deemed not fashionable enough to play for certain clubs. It makes me sick.

“Well done to Ronald Koeman for looking through all that nonsense.”

United have been criticised for their lack of attacking intent under manager Louis van Gaal in recent weeks.

The Red Devils’s sixth league defeat of the season left them five points behind Tottenham in fourth.

The result means that United have now only won two of their last 10 Premier League games heading into their FA Cup trip to Derby County on Friday night.
