Ian Wright criticises Arsenal man for Theo Walcott gesture

Ian Wright was not impressed by this decision from Arsenal on Sunday...

Ian Wright has criticised Per Mertesacker for handing Theo Walcott the Arsenal captaincy during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea.

Walcott led his team onto the pitch to mark his 10-year anniversary at the club and was then handed the armband by the German defender before kick-off.

Mertesacker went on to endure an afternoon to forget as he was sent off for bringing down Diego Costa in the 18th minute, before the Spaniard gave Chelsea the lead shortly after.

Arsenal failed to click into gear against the Blues and slumped to a 1-0 loss to leave them in third place in the Premier League table.

And Gunners legend Wright was less than impressed by Mertesacker’s decision to give Walcott the captaincy.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday, Wright said: “When Theo was lining up as a captain, I didn’t understand what was going on.

“Obviously it was because of his 10 years. If it wasn’t a decision that came from the manager and Per gave it to him, I feel their minds can’t be right.

“You’re going out to beat a Chelsea side and your manager has made you the captain. Just because you want to make a gesture… yes, they’re mates.

“But your mind needs to be on the game that you’re playing, not leading out Arsenal because he has done 10 years at the club.”
