Ian Wright expresses his surprise at reported Liverpool deal

Ian Wright says he is surprised that Simon Mignolet is reportedly set to sign a new Liverpool contract

Ian Wright has expressed his surprise that Liverpool number one Simon Mignolet is set to be rewarded with a new Reds contract.

The Belgium international conceded two goals on Saturday afternoon as Liverpool suffered a resounding 2-0 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday afternoon.

Mignolet, who moved to Anfield from Sunderland in 2013, has made a number of high-profile mistakes this season, including mishaps against Rubin Kazan and West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.

According to reports in the British media, the 27-year-old goalkeeper is set to put pen to paper on a new long-term contract despite his unconvincing Liverpool career so far.

Former Arsenal striker Wright says he is surprised Liverpool aren’t looking to sign a new goalkeeper to replace error-prone Mignolet.

“I’m very surprised to here that Mignolet is going to getting a new contract with all due respect. I think they should be looking to buy a new goalkeeper,” Wright told The Sun.

“Whether or not they are trying to keep him happy while they get another goalkeeper because I can’t understand that one.”

Mignolet has made 118 appearances for Liverpool since his £9m move to Anfield from Sunderland under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers in the summer of 2013.
