Ian Wright issues Liverpool warning over Daniel Sturridge

Ian Wright says Liverpool shouldn't rush Daniel Sturridge back into the side if the striker is carrying an injury

Ian Wright has warned Liverpool not to rush Daniel Sturridge back into the competitive action.

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Sturridge wouldn’t feature for the next 10 days or so as the Liverpool forward continues to recover from his latest injury setback.

If Sturridge does play when he is injured, then he is just going to cause himself more damage

The Liverpool supporters have grown increasingly impatient with the 26-year-old striker over the past 18 months or so after Sturridge featured in just 16 Premier League games.

However, former Arsenal striker Wright underlined the importance of allowing Sturridge to recover in his own time.

“Sturridge seems to be coming under pressure at Liverpool to play even if he is carrying a knock,” Wright told BBC Sport.

“He has also missed a lot of football in recent months – he has suffered 18 separate injuries since he moved to Anfield in January 2013 and only played in 26% of Liverpool’s games in all competitions since the start of last season – but he has already proved that, when fit, he is still an absolutely top-class striker.”

Wright continued: “Everybody has got a different pain threshold and a different way of dealing with it. Without knowing what Sturridge is going through, it is unfair to comment on it like that.

“I understand why Klopp and the Liverpool fans want him back, because they are not doing as well without him but, if Sturridge does play when he is injured, then he is just going to cause himself more damage.”

The 26-year-old has played a mere 108 minutes of first-team football since Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers in October, although he did score a brilliant brace in a 6-1 League Cup win at Southampton.

Sturridge moved to Liverpool in a £12m deal from defending Premier League champions Chelsea in January 2013.
