Ian Wright praises Petr Cech for handling of this Arsenal moment
Ian Wright picks out Petr Cech for praise after the Arsenal goalkeeper put his title experience to use
Ian Wright has praised Petr Cech for rallying the Arsenal team following Sunday’s demoralising 1-0 loss to Chelsea.
The defending Premier League champions extended their unbeaten run against the Gunners after Diego Costa scored a first-half winner for the visitors at the Emirates Stadium.
What is good about someone like Petr Cech who has been in the situation, he was picking them up
Cech was a key part of the Chelsea side that haven’t lost to Arsenal since 2011 before the 33-year-old Czech Republic shot stopper moved to the Gunners in a £11m deal last summer.
The four-time Premier League winner was caught on camera lifting centre-half Laurent Koscielny to his feet following the full-time whistle after Arsenal couldn’t find an equaliser with 10 men.
Former Arsenal striker Wright praised Cech for using his title-race experience to lift the spirits of his team-mates after a battling performance following Per Mertesacker’s first-half sending off.
“You’ve seen Koscielny crouched over. Obviously Arsenal lost the game, he was down and he looked like he had just lost the league at the end of the season,” Wright told BBC Radio Five Live.
“They haven’t lost the league. What is good about someone like Petr Cech who has been in the situation, he was picking them up. It isn’t all over.
“You can’t show that kind of demeanour. Of course you’re disappointed, you’ve got to realise that there is still plenty to play for. Arsenal need to string a couple of wins together pretty quickly.”
Arsenal are three points behind surprise leaders Leicester City ahead of their next Premier League game against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium next week.
