Jamie Carragher pinpoints Arsenal’s major weakness
Jamie Carragher says Per Mertesacker remains a major weakness in Arsenal's side
Jamie Carragher has pinpointed Per Mertesacker as a major weakness in Arsenal’s side after Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea at The Emirates.
The Gunners defender was sent off in the first half after he brought down Diego Costa as the Chelsea striker raced clear of the Arsenal back four.
Arsene Wenger’s side didn’t recover and the Spain international broke the deadlock in the 23rd-minute with a close-range finish in north London.
Speaking on Sky Sports following Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat on Sunday evening, Carragher explained why Mertesacker is struggling to perform in the side.
“This [Mertesacker] is a major weak point of the Arsenal team whether they win the title or not. [Teams] getting after Mertesacker,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Bellerin is a full-back who likes to get forward and when Mertesacker gets exposed, he doesn’t have the pace to deal with it.”
Mertesacker, who lifted the World Cup with Germany in 2014, has won back-to-back FA Cups with the Gunners.
The towering Germany centre-half moved to Arsenal from Werder Bremen in August 2011.
Arsenal are three points behind surprise Premier League leaders Leicester City ahead of their next top-flight game against Southampton at The Emirates on Tuesday 2 February.
