Jamie Carragher reveals what he told Steven Gerrard about Arsenal star

Jamie Carragher is a keen admirer of Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil...

Jamie Carragher has revealed that he told Steven Gerrard that he wanted Liverpool to try to sign Mesut Ozil back in 2009.

Ozil has earned plenty of new admirers this season following his sparkling displays for Arsenal to help the Gunners move two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The German World Cup winner has scored three goals and notched up 16 assists in 19 Premier League games for the north London club so far this season and has been one of the top flight’s standout performers.

Liverpool legend Carragher has revealed that he is a big admirer of the former Real Madrid star, and has lifted the lid on how Ozil first caught his eye more than six years ago.

Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “I remember watching Ozil shine for Germany’s Under-21s in 2009 when they beat England 4-0 and said to Steven Gerrard at that time he was someone Liverpool had to go for.

“He was at Werder Bremen then and he was an attainable target. He continued that big impression at the World Cup in South Africa 12 months later but, by that time, Real Madrid had made their move.”
