Jamie Carragher: Why Liverpool are turning into Tottenham Hotspur

Jamie Carragher explains why their League Cup semi-final second leg is more important than Sunday's Man United clash

Jamie Carragher has reiterated his belief that Liverpool are turning into Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds are in ninth place in the Premier League table and five points behind Tottenham, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

The Capital One Cup offers a prime chance to restore the winning feeling

Liverpool haven’t won a trophy since Kenny Dalglish led the Reds to the League Cup in 2012, whilst the Merseyside outfit haven’t lifted the Premier League crown since 1990.

Former Reds defender Carragher believes lifting this season’s Capital One Cup would restore belief and a winning mentality at Anfield following three barren seasons.

“I said recently that Liverpool are turning into Spurs, as they don’t make the top four, sell their best players and don’t win trophies,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“Until that changes, I will stand by that. Spurs are trying to alter perceptions and that’s why I hope Klopp and the club see the importance of the second leg against Stoke.”

Liverpool face bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon following their 3-3 draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal mid-week.

But Carragher explained why he believes the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Stoke City and their upcoming Europa League last-32 meeting with Augsburg are bigger games than the visit of United.

Carragher added: “The Capital One Cup offers a prime chance to restore the winning feeling and another attainable target is the Europa League, particularly with an inviting draw against German side Augsburg in the last 32.

“These are the games that really matter for Liverpool. A victory over United would, of course, be enjoyed. This year, however, it wouldn’t be enjoyed anywhere near as much as one that would lead the way back to Wembley.”
