John Aldridge: Why Adam Lallana had best 30 minutes for Liverpool
John Aldridge heaps praise on Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana after his Norwich winner
John Aldridge says Adam Lallana’s cameo performance at Norwich City was the midfielder’s best 30 minutes in a Liverpool shirt.
The England international has struggled to justify his £25m fee since his move to Liverpool from Southampton in 2014.
He should be getting about 12 goals a season and assisting another 10
However, Lallana may have kick-started his Liverpool career after his dramatic impact against the Canaries at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon.
The 27-year-old midfielder teed up Roberto Firmino for his second goal of the game with a brilliant cross before he netted a 95th-minute winner to seal a 5-4 win for the Reds.
Writing in the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge challenged Lallana to score 12 goals and made 10 assists a season.
“If he’s honest with himself, Adam Lallana will know he’s underperformed since he came to Liverpool, even taking injuries into account,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“But that was the best half an hour he’s played for Liverpool by an absolute mile.
“He changed the game when he came on, was busy, effective, put in a great ball for Firmino’s goal and finished really well at the end.
“That is what Adam Lallana is about, we’ve seen it for Southampton and England.
“He should be getting about 12 goals a season and assisting another 10.”
Lallana’s winner at the Canaries was his first Premier League goal of the season after a subdued campaign so far.
The England midfielder could start against Stoke City in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final at Anfield on Tuesday night.
