John Barnes issues his backing for Liverpool’s former Arsenal star
John Barnes is backing Kolo Toure to deliver the goods in defence for Liverpool in the coming weeks
John Barnes believes that Kolo Toure has what it takes to cope with the responsibility of being one of Liverpool’s only fit defenders as the Reds prepare to host Arsenal at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Merseyside outfit have suffered a number of injury setbacks in recent weeks and swiftly moved to sign Steven Caulker on loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season on Tuesday.
Toure is likely to line up in central defence against his former employers at Anfield on Wednesday night, with Arsenal heading into the game two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
And despite conceding that Liverpool’s injury crisis is far from ideal, former Red Barnes feels that Toure has what it takes to lead from the back in the coming weeks.
Barnes wrote on his blog for Titanbet: “It seems unlikely that anyone will be in for the Arsenal game, long or short-term, so [Jurgen] Klopp will have to deal with what he has, and that means Kolo Toure is likely to play at the back.
“The Ivorian isn’t getting any younger and against quick players, of which Arsenal have many, there is some cause for concern for some.
“For me, though, I’m not at all worried. Toure is a vastly experienced defender who has won titles and knows what he’s doing.
“I have faith in him, as I do all of Liverpool’s players, and I’m sure he’ll want to show what he can still do against one of his old clubs.”
Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Exeter in the FA Cup on Friday following their disappointing 2-0 loss to West Ham United earlier this month.
