John Barnes offers Jurgen Klopp advice over Liverpool signings
John Barnes says Jurgen Klopp shouldn't make any Liverpool signings until the summer transfer window
John Barnes says Jurgen Klopp should wait until the summer before further strengthening his Liverpool squad.
The Reds have already signed Serbian teenager Marko Grujic and Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker on loan in the January transfer window.
In the summer managers have time to work with signings
Klopp, who took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers at Anfield in October, has also been linked with a big-money move for Bayern Munich playmaker Mario Gotze and Schalke 04 defensive midfielder Joel Matip.
But former Liverpool captain Barnes believes Klopp should wait until the summer, when the charismatic German will have more of an opportunity to work with his new signings on the training ground.
“I don’t think January is a good time to sign players and I’m not a fan of the January transfer window,” Barnes exclusively told The Sport Review.
“If you’re looking at players who aren’t necessarily settled at their clubs, are you getting the best players you can? Also, in the summer managers have time to work with signings.
“Obviously, Jurgen Klopp coming in when he did was not ideal, as he didn’t have a good pre-season to put in place his ideas.
“I’m not writing this season off and Liverpool are in with a chance of finishing fourth, but I’m really looking more to put the pressure on the team next year.”
Liverpool played out a six-goal thriller with Arsenal on Wednesday night as Joe Allen’s late equaliser secured a 3-3 draw.
The 25-year-old came off the bench to replace Emre Can in the 82nd minute before the midfielder managed to guide a low shot past Petr Cech following Christian Benteke’s header.
Allen has been out of favour for much of the season under Klopp and his predecessor Rodgers, which has prompted talk of a move away from Anfield in the January transfer window.
