Johnny Giles: Why Jurgen Klopp needs to accomodate Liverpool striker
Johnny Giles explains why Jurgen Klopp should give Liverpool striker Christian Benteke a chance
Johnny Giles says Jurgen Klopp should accommodate Christian Benteke in his Liverpool side.
The Belgium international has started from the bench in Liverpool’s most recent Premier League games against Arsenal and Manchester United.
Until he gets somebody who he really wants in that position, I would go with Benteke
Benteke failed to find the net as he was one of the only first-team players to start Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Exeter City in their FA Cup third-round replay.
The 25-year-old has only started four Premier League games since the former Borussia Dortmund manager took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October.
Former Manchester United midfielder Giles believes Benteke can play a certain role in Klopp’s side, but admits the Belgian won’t run as much as other more mobile strikers.
“All managers have a philosophy in terms of how they want their side to play,” Giles told Newstalk.
“In Klopp’s case, he wants people up front who are very, very mobile. He really believes in that.
“Benteke is never going to be able to do that. He is never going to chase down the opposition, but he will get you goals. You have to accommodate him as other managers have done.
“Until he gets somebody who he really wants in that position, I would go with Benteke. He will get you goals. There are times he won’t be running around like Klopp would want him to.
“But there aren’t that many players around that can do that.”
Benteke is Liverpool’s top scorer in the Premier League after a return of six goals in 19 games so far this season.
The Belgium striker became Liverpool’s second most-expensive signing after a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa in the summer.
