Jurgen Klopp says he is flattered to receive Sir Alex Ferguson’s endorsement as Liverpool manager.

The former Manchester United boss has backed Klopp to improve Liverpool’s ailing fortunes after the 48-year-old took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October.

Maybe he is the greatest ever. The John Lennon of football!

Klopp is set to take charge of Liverpool for his first north-west derby at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as Manchester United look to return to winning ways in the Premier League.

The Liverpool manager was honoured to hear that Ferguson is worried about the Merseyside outfit’s potential with Klopp at the helm.

“I’d a few really good moments with Sir Alex. For me, as a young manager, it is a big honour to talk to Sir Alex. For a football manager, it is nearly the best thing you can do,” Klopp told his pre-match media conference.

“Maybe he is the greatest ever. The John Lennon of football! It is really impressive to talk to him. It is a big amount of respect from my side for what he did in life. It isn’t easy for another manager to do it again.

Klopp continued: “I have to prove it. We’re closer than a few weeks ago. It is not only our job. Man Utd came a little bit from the other direction.”

Klopp has won 48 per cent of his games in charge of Liverpool since his appointment following the Merseyside derby in October.

Liverpool are in ninth place and three points behind sixth-placed United ahead of Sunday’s clash at Anfield.
