Van Gaal delivers latest Man United injury update after Southampton defeat

Louis van Gaal confirms that Matteo Darmian was taken to hospital after Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Southampton

Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Matteo Darmian was taken to hospital following Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Southampton on Sunday.

The Italy full-back becomes the latest Red Devils defender to be sidelined after he came off worse in an aerial challenge with Shane Long at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old was brought off after 60 minutes with the score at 0-0, before Charlie Austin came off the bench to head home a memorable winner for the visitors.

And speaking after the game, Van Gaal confirmed that United had suffered the injury setback.

Speaking at his post-match news conference at Old Trafford, Van Gaal said: “It is bad because he is now in hospital.

“He was spitting blood. It looks like his rib and his chest, but we have to wait and see as I cannot say. It was not a nice view for the players to see that.

“I can only say that is the fifth full back who has been injured so that is what I have to do every week – make solutions to sort the problem.”

Darmian joins the likes of Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia on the sidelines to add to the club’s injury woes.

Manchester United, who are now fifth in the Premier League table, must now prepare for their trip to Derby in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night.
