Van Gaal delivers latest Man United injury update ahead of Newcastle trip
Louis van Gaal delivers the latest Manchester United injury news ahead of Tuesday's trip to Newcastle
Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger is a doubt for Manchester United’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
The Germany international picked up an injury late on during United’s nervy 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup third round on Saturday evening and initially looked to be in severe pain, before completing the 90 minutes for the home side.
Speaking to the media after the game, Van Gaal confirmed that Schweinsteiger had suffered a knee problem but that United were waiting to assess the seriousness of the injury.
Van Gaal told his post match news conference at Old Trafford: “It shall be difficult of course [for Schweinsteiger to face Newcastle].
“I don’t know yet but I think he has a knee problem. Everyone thinks he has an ankle problem but I think it’s more the knee than the ankle. We’ll have to wait and see.”
The Dutchman also went on to deliver updates on the fitness of Morgan Schneiderlin, who was rested for Saturday’s cup clash at Old Trafford.
The United manager continued: “Schneiderlin is not injured but he’s in the red zone and had an overload. In the Christmas period, he played every game and we have to take care of that.
“I don’t take risks and, because of that, we have a very young bench. I trust these players also because [Andreas] Pereira is coming in and was a very good substitute, I think.
“With our injuries and players in the red zone, we have to take care of it. I think we have done it well.”
The Red Devils head into Tuesday’s trip to St James’ Park in fifth place in the Premier League table and three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
