Liverpool signing: Why I don’t want Steven Gerrard’s No8 shirt
Marko Grujic isn't keen on Liverpool's number eight shirt
Marko Grujic says it would be difficult to wear Liverpool’s number eight shirt.
The 19-year-old midfielder put pen to paper on a Reds deal earlier this month after Liverpool agreed a reported £5.1m deal with Serbian club Red Star Belgrade amid interest from CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg.
The Serbia Under-21 international has returned on loan until the end of the season before he will link up with Jurgen Klopp’s side in the summer.
Speaking to Serbian newspaper Blic, Grujic explained why he would avoid wearing Steven Gerrard’s former number which has been vacant since the 36-year-old moved to LA Galaxy last summer.
“It would be very difficult,” Grujic said.
“I thought it was possible, but no player in the world, to come from Real Madrid or Barcelona, would want this burden.
“It is better to start slowly and then build.
“I’ll have maybe 35, like at the beginning with Star, or 88 — definitely something that has to do with an eight.”
The 19-year-old midfielder has scored five goals in 22 top-flight appearances for Red Star so far this season.
Grujic, who was also linked with their bitter Premier League rivals Manchester United, made his debut aged just 17 in 2013.
Liverpool played out a goalless draw with West Ham United in their FA Cup fourth round at Anfield on Saturday.
