Liverpool urged to make January transfer bid for Schalke star
Danny Murphy feels that Liverpool should make a bid to sign Joel Matip from Schalke this month
Danny Murphy has told Liverpool to consider making a January bid to sign defender Joel Matip from Schalke to help shore up the Reds’ back-line.
The Reds have struggled to find consistent form under new manager Jurgen Klopp despite some impressive victories over the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City since his appointment at Anfield.
Klopp watched his Liverpool side slump to a disappointing 2-0 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park in their first game of the year at the weekend to leave them six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham in the Premier League table.
Matip, who is out of contract at the Bundesliga side, has been touted as a possible target for Liverpool as Klopp considers bolstering his squad in the first transfer window since he took over at Anfield.
And former Liverpool midfielder Murphy feels that Matip would be a sensible recruit for the Merseyside outfit.
Murphy told talkSPORT: “[A] problem area for the Reds is in the centre of defence, where they find their options severely depleted after the injury to Martin Skrtel. Skrtel is often regarded as Liverpool’s defensive rock but the Slovakian is culpable to rash decision making and his positioning isn’t always consistent.
“Dejan Lovren has improved in recent weeks while Mamadou Sakho is a bit of a cult hero on Merseyside, but a move for Schalke star Joel Matip would make sense for both parties.
“The Cameroonian is out of contract in the summer and therefore free to talk to other clubs this month. At over 6ft 3in, he is a commanding presence and is also comfortable in a defensive midfield role.”
