Louis van Gaal sends message to Man United ahead of Liverpool clash

Louis van Gaal says his Manchester United players must bounce back from their draw at Newcastle against Liverpool on Sunday

Louis van Gaal has warned his Manchester United players that they must quickly get over the disappointment of not beating Newcastle and focus on this weekend’s crunch showdown with Liverpool.

Van Gaal watched his side squander 2-0 and 3-2 leads at St James’ Park as the Magpies battled back to earn a point in a thrilling 3-3 Premier League draw on Tuesday night.

United have failed to find consistent form in recent weeks and have come in for criticism for a string of below-par displays.

The Red Devils dropped down into sixth place in the Premier League table following Tuesday’s draw, with Van Gaal’s side having only won three of their last 10 games in the top flight.

And the Manchester United boss concedes that both and he and his players will have to quickly get over their midweek disappointment as they prepare to travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to BT Sport after Tuesday’s draw, Van Gaal said: “It is a very big game for Manchester United but also for Liverpool.

“Now, I am still with my mind on this game and that is not such a happy ending.”

Asked about the result at St James’ Park, he added: “We threw it away. You have to finish the game much earlier.”
