Mark Lawrenson pinpoints what Man United need to do in the January transfer window
Mark Lawrenson discusses what Manchester United could do in the January transfer window
Mark Lawrenson believes that Manchester United could benefit from the signing of a new centre-forward in the January transfer window as Louis van Gaal looks to turn his side’s stuttering form around.
The Red Devils’ struggles in recent weeks have been well-documented, with a winless run of eight games in all competitions causing United to drop out of the top four in the Premier League table.
United have inevitably been linked with a host of players ahead of the January transfer window.
Former Liverpool man Lawrenson feels that a new number nine would help to solve some of United’s struggles in front of goal and is also urging Van Gaal to consider a swoop for Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben.
Lawrenson told BBC Sport: “Can United solve any of their problems in January? It depends who they can get. A new number nine might help but they need to inject some pace into their team and, more importantly, start to play with the handbrake off a bit.
“They are good enough defensively to cope with most sides but from midfield going forward it is just so pedestrian. That is a problem.
“I was reading that they were trying to get Arjen Robben from Bayern Munich and I know he knows Louis van Gaal but would Robben want to come and play in this United team, and would he make that much of a difference? I’m not sure, not with the way they are playing.
“It is a change of style they need as much as personnel.”
United, who were held to a goalless draw by Chelsea in their most recent top-flight outing last week, host Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
