Mark Lawrenson has backed Arsenal to beat Stoke City on Sunday despite their draining six-goal thriller at Anfield mid-week.

The Gunners squandered a second-half lead on Merseyside as Joe Allen scored a 90th-minute equaliser for Liverpool to rescue a point in a 3-3 draw at Anfield.

Arsenal have a poor record at the Britannia Stadium over the past five season, with the Potters unbeaten in five games against the Gunners at home.

But former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Arsene Wenger’s side can end that miserable run and underline their Premier League title ambitions in Sunday’s late kick-off.

“In many ways, going to the Britannia Stadium is a more difficult fixture for Arsenal than Wednesday’s trip to Anfield,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

“For one thing, they have already had to work hard in their draw with Liverpool, and the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have already slipped up at Stoke so we know how hard it is to get a positive result there.

“These two back-to-back away games will give a real indication of the strengthen Gunners’ title bid – I think they are going to win and, if they do get four points from trips to Liverpool and Stoke in the space of four days, then I think a lot of the cynical old pros out there will be looking at them and thinking they are definitely favourites to win this league.”

Arsenal are top of the Premier League table but level on points with second-placed Leicester City after the Foxes were 1-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night.
