Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Exeter v Liverpool
Mark Lawrenson is expecting a Liverpool win at Exeter in the FA Cup third round on Friday
Mark Lawrenson is tipping Liverpool to secure a narrow 2-1 away win at Exeter to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men head into the cup clash looking to build on their 1-0 win over Stoke City in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.
The Reds are preparing for the game with a severely depleted squad, with 13 players currently sidelined due to injury.
However, former Liverpool man Lawrenson is expecting to see the Reds book their place in the fourth round with an away win on Friday night.
Lawrenson told BBC Sport: “Exeter have lost their past four games in League Two but they do not look in danger of relegation and I can see them having a real go at Liverpool because they have got nothing to lose.
“This is the first time the Grecians have been in round three since 2005, when they went to Old Trafford as a non-league team and drew with Manchester United, before losing in the replay.
“A replay might be the Grecians’ target this time too, to take the tie back to Anfield, but getting this far and having the game televised live on BBC One as well as playing in front of a full house means they have already generated some decent money.
“I have a feeling Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will field the same sort of team he has been doing in the Europa League, where quite a few younger players have been involved and done OK. They should get the job done on Friday too.”
Liverpool have struggled to produce consistent form since Klopp’s appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield back in October.
The Reds have secured impressive away wins against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City but have also suffered defeats by West Ham United and Watford in recent weeks.
