The Germany international was unable to have a telling impact on the Anfield clash after the £42.5m signing failed to score a goal or make an assist despite his excellent recent form.
Ozil went missing. He was taken off when he should have been the most influential player that Arsene Wenger had
Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud cancelled out Roberto Firmino’s goals in the first half, before Joe Allen netted a 90th-minute leveller after the France striker’s second-half goal.
Former United midfielder Giles was deeply unimpressed with Ozil’s lacklustre display against the 18-time English champions before he was replaced by Mikel Arteta in the 87th minute.
“The player who let them down most and is getting a lot of publicity for player of the year is Ozil,” Giles told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“He was the one who had the talent to get hold of the ball and do what needed to be done. He needed to take the pressure of Arsenal. Ozil was actually taking off and put on the bench.
“If he is footballer of the year this year, I’m a Dutchman. When they actually needed Ozil, they really needed him at that particular time, he wasn’t there.”
Giles added: “Ozil went missing. He was taken off when he should have been the most influential player that Arsene Wenger had.”
Ozil has scored three goals and has made 16 assists in 20 Premier League games for the north London side so far this season.
Arsenal are top of the Premier League table but level on points with second-placed Leicester City ahead of their trip to Stoke City in Sunday’s late kick-off.
Ozil moved to Arsenal from Real Madrid in a club-record £42.5m deal in August 2013.
