Michael Owen: Jurgen Klopp needs Liverpool to sign top players
Michael Owen believes Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side are inconsistent due to a lack of top players
Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have enough top players in his Liverpool squad, according to Michael Owen.
The Reds suffered a comprehensive 2-0 loss to West Ham United in the Premier League at Upton Park on Saturday evening following goals from Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll.
Top players are top because they produce consistently good performances
Klopp, who replaced Brendan Rodgers at Anfield following October’s Merseyside derby, spoke of his angry at his Liverpool players following their lacklustre performance against the Hammers.
The 18-time English champions have only won five of their 12 Premier League games under Klopp, and the Reds have lost three of their last four matches on the road in the English top-flight.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat by West Ham, former Reds striker Owen explained why Klopp’s side are so inconsistent at the moment, underlining the need to sign some top players.
“It highlights the importance of the players,” Owen told BT Sport.
“They’re the same players that played under Brendan Rodgers.
“Top players are top because they produce consistently good performances, there aren’t enough top players in that team, that’s why some weeks they’re good, some weeks they’re not.”
Liverpool have only beaten Chelsea, Manchester City, Leicester City, Sunderland and Swansea City since Klopp took over at Anfield.
