Neil Mellor states his prediction for Norwich v Liverpool
Neil Mellor is tipping Jurgen Klopp to rest Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson
Neil Mellor has tipped Jurgen Klopp to rest Jordan Henderson for Liverpool’s clash against Norwich City.
The Reds face the Canaries in Saturday’s early kick-off at Carrow Road just days before the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Stoke City.
Liverpool hold a slender 1-0 aggregate lead from the first leg at the Britannia Stadium thanks to Jordon Ibe’s winner ahead of Tuesday night’s Anfield clash.
Former Reds striker Mellor believes Klopp won’t take any chances on the fitness of Henderson, backing the Liverpool manager to rest two of his key players on Saturday.
“I know it is Norwich City first but I hope and believe Jurgen Klopp will already have one eye on the game that follows,” Mellor told Liverpool Echo.
“Because the Stoke match at Anfield next Tuesday night is a huge one now and we’ll want the lads to be fit, fresh and firing on all cylinders with Wembley potentially just 90 minutes away.
“So for me, the boss has some calls to make regarding the Norwich game. I think Jordan Henderson will be one of them. He was terrific against Arsenal but not quite at the same level against United a few days later.
“With his injury problems this season, that’s understandable. I know people don’t like the word ‘rested’ with players but it might just be wise to leave Jordan out of the starting line up at Carrow Road, because he can be a big player for us against Stoke – and we’ll need him fully charged.”
Liverpool are looking to win the Capital One Cup for a record eighth time and lift their first League Cup trophy since 2012.
Henderson made a return from an injury problem in December and the Liverpool captain has been ever-present in Klopp’s side since his comeback.
Liverpool are in ninth place in the Premier League table.
