Pat Nevin: These are reasons for Cesc Fabregas’ return to Chelsea form
Pat Nevin discusses Cesc Fabregas's return to form for Chelsea
Pat Nevin says there are two reasons behind Cesc Fabregas’s return to form for Chelsea.
The Spain international was named the man of the match following an influential performance in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over his former club, Arsenal, on Sunday.
Fabregas has struggled like most of the Chelsea squad to match his impressive heights of last season and has been the subject of criticism for his below-par displays.
But former Blues midfielder Nevin says Fabregas is enjoying his new-found freedom under Guus Hiddink, while the midfielder’s confidence has returned.
Asked why Fabregas has rediscovered some good form, Nevin told Newstalk: “Two things pop into mind.
“One thing, which everyone will think, he has been given freedom now. There is less intensity with the manager on top of him all the time. He seemed to have a good relationship with the manager. He feels a little bit more open.
Nevin added: “I think it is the old simplistic thing of confidence.”
Diego Costa scored a first-half winner against 10-man Arsenal in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
Fabregas has scored one goal and has made three assists in 22 Premier League games for the defending champions so far this season.
The World Cup winner moved to Chelsea from Barcelona in a £27m deal in 2014.
