Liverpool can’t defend, claims Arsenal legend
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool and Manchester United to finish all square at Anfield on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson has questioned Liverpool’s defending ahead of their clash against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
Liverpool and Arsenal finished in a 3-3 stalemate at Anfield on Wednesday night after Joe Allen’s dramatic 90th-minute equaliser on Merseyside for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Earlier in the week, the Red Devils twice squandered the lead at St James’s Park before eventually settling for a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
Unsurprisingly given the recent defensive performances of Liverpool and United, former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing the two sides to play out a score draw at Anfield when the bitter rivals meet on Sunday afternoon.
“This is shaping up to be a great game. Both teams scored three and conceded three in midweek so I can’t see anything but goals in this game,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Liverpool can’t defend but they will have a go. A draw is pointless for both teams and because of that it will be a gung-ho football match. Both sides will be going all out for victory and that will make it a superb game to watch.
“However, I can’t split the two sides and I’m going for a 2-2 draw with Wayne Rooney continuing his goal-scoring form.”
United are in sixth place in the Premier League table but only nine points behind leaders Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s game on Merseyside.
Klopp’s men are further down the standings in ninth place after their fourth draw in 12 Premier League games since the German took over from Brendan Rodgers.
