Paul Merson makes bold claim about Arsenal and the FA Cup

Paul Merson reckons Arsenal's FA Cup win in 2014 was crucial for Arsene Wenger

Paul Merson has claimed that Arsene Wenger would no long be the manager of Arsenal if he had failed to guide the Gunners to the FA Cup back in 2014.

The north London side, having gone nine years without winning a major trophy, found themselves 2-0 down against Hull City in the final before eventually coming back to secure a 3-2 extra-time victory at Wembley.

Arsenal went on to lift the same trophy for the second successive season last year as some of the pressure on Wenger to deliver major silverware was relieved.

However, former Arsenal man Merson feels that Wenger owes a lot to the FA Cup and believes the Frenchman would have left Emirates Stadium if the Gunners had not won the trophy two years ago.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ before Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday, Merson said: “Let’s be honest, if it wasn’t for this FA Cup, Arsene Wenger wouldn’t be at Arsenal.

“When they were 2-0 down against Hull City and the ball gets cleared off the line, believe me, no way would he have seen June at Arsenal – no way.

“This has been a kind cup to him.”
